Armin Binz (1949) founded the Institute of Energy in Building at the FHNW (University of Applied Sciences of Northwestern Switzerland; www.fhnw.ch/habg/iebau) and headed it for 20 years. The institute is focused on research and education in the scope of energy efficiency and renewable energies in the building sector and is offering a master course in sustainable building. His research topics stretch from application problems of vacuum insulation panels for buildings to net zero energy buildings to sustainable urban planning tasks. At the end of the year 2012 Armin Binz took an early retirement as a professor and head of institute at the FHNW. At this occasion he also withdraw from heading the MINERGIE Agency (technical office of MINERGIE, the Swiss label for energy efficient building, www.minergie.ch) and is working since then as a consultant in energy efficient building with his own firm (Binz Energy in Building Ltd). 2016/17 he returned to the Minergie team as deputy manager for a limited time. He there was primarily responsible for the development of the building standards 2017. Since then he continues to advise Minergie as an external expert. For the university, he regularly supervises master's theses and other student research projects in his field.  In recent years, the focus has increasingly shifted to consulting assignments for foreign projects, e.g. in China, but especially in Latin America.
